THE CLEANUP NOTEBOOK
Build a waste plan into the job schedule.
Estimate waste by phase
Demolition, framing, roofing, and finish work create different waste streams. Identify likely volume, density, and restricted materials for each stage. Include packaging and offcuts rather than considering only the material removed from the existing structure.
Make placement a site decision
Review delivery access with the site supervisor and keep the container clear of active equipment, pedestrian routes, fire access, and staging areas. Establish who can approve the drop location and who will communicate schedule changes.
Give the crew clear load rules
Share accepted materials, loading height, and weight limits with everyone using the container. Mark a separate area for hazardous products and material that needs special disposal. A mixed load can create problems even when one person added the restricted item.
Plan pickup and potential exchanges
Track the load as work progresses and arrange collection before access is blocked by later phases. Discuss exchange availability in advance for high-volume jobs. Document rental terms and any changes so disposal costs can be understood alongside the project budget.
This guide is general information. Accepted materials, weight limits, permits, and rental terms must be checked for your particular project and location.
